Abstract

692,085. Rotary spherical valves. SAUNDERS VALVE CO., Ltd., and PRICE R. H. April 14, 1950 [May 17, 1949], No. 13141/49. Class 135 In a plug cock having a rotatable plug 1 with a spherical working surface, which plug is held fully floating between separate seating rings 8 of vulcanized rubber or other material of similar resilience, the seating rings are of substantially triangular section and have a conical surface which contacts the plug surface and a narrow rim or diaphragm 9 at the corner opposite the conical surface which rim or diaphragm is clamped to the cock casing 4. The outer cylindrical surfaces 11 of the seating rings 8 are a loose fit in the cock casing. The rims 9 engage recesses 5 and are held by end fittings 7 forming pipe connections. The rings 8 also have flanges 14 directed radially inwardly down to a diameter equal to the through bore 3 of the plug 1. The radial end face of each seating ring 9 may be recessed as shown at 15, Fig. 4, to give access of fluid pressure thereto to press the seating ring more firmly into engagement with the plug. Alternatively the end fitting 7 may be recessed or both the end surface of the ring and the end fitting may be recessed. The plug is operated by a spindle 18 mounted in a bonnet 17 and having a non-circular tongue 21 co-operating with a corresponding recess 20. As shown the spindle 18 is sealed by a double sleeve 22 as described in Specification 692,097, [Group XXVI]. It could however be sealed by an ordinary stuffing box and gland or by a flexible'sleeve as described in Specification 577,699. The plug may be constructed as described in Specification 639,336.
