Abstract
676,914. Magnetrons. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 10, 1950 [May 13, 1949], No. 11638/50. Class 39 (i). A magnetron for generating high frequency oscillations, of the kind in which a conductive helix 6 constitutes an electric resonator which determines the frequency and a cathode 4 is located outside the helix so that that part of each helical turn which faces the cathode functions as an anode element, is characterized in that the turns of the helix are connected to one another by means of a conductor 8 which is attached to them at points remote from the cathode. The helix may be straight and the cathode flat, or, as in Fig. 1, the helix may be bent into a circle and the cathode arranged at the centre of the circle. The helix may be supported by a pair of Lecher wires 5 from which the output is taken and may be made of metal tubing through which cooling liquid can be passed; the frequency may be adjusted by varying the temperature and consequently the dimensions of the helix, the length of one helical turn being an integral number of half wavelengths of the frequency generated. The glass envelope is preferably flattened in the vicinity of the electrodes to reduce the air gap in the magnetic circuit.
