A herbal smoking mixture comprises the leaves of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), alone or with those of other herbs, which have been impregnated and/or fermented, together with shredded fruit peels if desired, in a liquid flavouring or other medium, shredded, and only partially dried out. In one method of manufacture, the leaves are gathered and preserved whole or in as large portions as possible, and treated, after a limited degree of drying, with a solution of any one or more of the following: -fruit juices (concentrated or natural), sugar preparations, potassium nitrate, acids, alkalies, glycerine, an adhesive mucilage, colouring materials, flavourings such as liquorice and coumarin, and pulverised materials affecting the taste of the ultimate smoke. The leaves, together with the fruit peels if used, are laid in layers in tanks and each layer treated, the resultant mass being then compressed to produce a coherent block which is cut up into strips of suitable width which may, if desired, be rubbed out. Controlled drying is then effected as in a convection oven or by infrared lamps, so as to leave the resultant product slightly damp. Instead of treating the leaves and peel as they are being stacked, the liquid medium may be sprayed thereon whilst they are agitated in a vessel. Compression of the treated leaves and peel may be omitted in either case.
