676,455. Inlaid surface coverings. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. Dec. 19, 1949 [June 20, 1949], No. 32484/49. Class 140. A method of making surface cover. ings of the inlaid type comprises depositing upon a foundation or support a layer of heterogeneously intermingled granules of a base colour composition and individually discernable granules of a plurality of single-coloured variegating colour compositions, with a plurality of openings in the body layer for the reception of inlays, and filling the openings with a plurality of singlecolour compositions at least some of which correspond in colour to the variegating colour compositions of the body layer. The mixture of base colour composition and variegating granules is applied to a foundation material 2, which may be burlap or waterproof felt, through a stencil 3 comprising a grid of wires 14, 15 to which solid members 16 are fixed to provide openings in the body layer, these being subsequently filled in with the variegating colour compositions as the web is stationed successively below stencils 4 to 9, each of which is in the form of metal plates, such as 18, Fig. 4, having therein apertures such as 17, which correspond to some of the solid members 16 of the stencil 3. In certain cases, two apertures in different stencils may be used for filling a single opening in the body layer. The completed pattern then receives a light pressing at 10 before proceeding to hydraulic presses such as 11 and 12 and curing if required. The body layer may be composed of a singlecolour linoleum composition having granules, all of which will pass a 5-mesh per inch screen, with which minor proportions of compositions of the variegating colours, having the same size of granule, are mixed. The mixes for the inlays may be of finer granule size, and sieved to remove particles which will not pass a 6 to 8 mesh per inch screen.
