This invention relates to surface covering such as linoleum and provides a surface coverin which in itself may possess highly desirab e ornamental effects or which may form an intermediate product in the production of linoleums or the like of. improved cable to manufacture by the rotary machine.
despite the advantage of low cost which it offers. The rotary machine comprises essentially a drum having die rolls arranged around its periphery which ,die rolls are effective for cutting out pattern elements and applying thesame 'to a backin as it moves ie roll is required for each color used in the pattern. Prior to my invention the die rolls have al- Ways been used to entirely cover the backing. I provide for covering a portion only of the backing so that it is exposed between pattern elements. Desirable eii'ects may thus be secured. in certain cases some or all of the exposed portions of the backing may he filled in by other pattern'elements. For instance, brightly colored pattern elements may he filled in loy hand and calenderedto the hacking.
My improved process and the machine for carrying the same into efiect are more fully descrihed and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 363,581 filed May 16, 1929. The resent application is directed to the material itself.
the accompanying drawing illustratinc; different storms which my invention may talre,
Figure l is a top plan view of a piece of my improved linoleum,
l ignne 2 is a top plan view of another form thereof, and
Figure 3 is a view of a piece of the linoleum oil Fig. 2 after it has had additional pattern elements applied thereto.
a linoleum comprisinga backing 2 having pattern elements 3 applied (thereto. The
acking consists of a burla w an overlying coating 5m linoleum mix. The pattern elements 3 are applied to this coating 5 and are firmly secured thereto as 1, the pattern elements are of diflerent colors so as to form any desired design.
In Fig. 2, I have shown another type of linoleum wherein the pattern elements, instead of being'spaced each from its adjacent element,- are contiguous. -However, certain portions of the web are left enposed as indicated at '11. The pattern elements are indicated at 12 and as shown they are of difierent colors so as to give the desired efi'ects,
The linoleum pattern elements, of course,
have a certain thickness, and hence the .base
lies at a lower level than the top ofthe pattern elements.
Fig. 3 shows a piece of linoleum of the type of Fig. 2, wherein, some or all of the exposed portions ll of the web have been filled in by brightly colored patterns elements 21 which provide haphazard spots of color in the pattern. Such spots are desirable in that they break the monotony of a regular pattern and thereby improve the appearance. l have shown at 3a in Fig. 1 brightly colored pattern elements which contrast with the main body of the material.
In the linoleums of Fig. l and Fig. '2, the applied attern elements stand at a higher level at an the base material.
l have illustrated and described by way oi? example only two types of linoleum made according to my invention. It will he understood that the invention is not limited to such forms but may be otherwise embodied within the scope of the following claims.-
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a surface covering comprising a base made up of a fabric web and a substantially continuously extending layer of linoleum mix thereover and pattern elements oflinoleum mix Referring first to Figure 1,. there is shown- Web 4 having calendering or cementing. overlying and secured to the base, the base being exposed between at least some of the pattern elements.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a surfacecoveringcomprising a base having a fabric weband whose u per face presents a substantially continuous y extending layer of linoleum mix and pattern elements of linoleum mix overlying a portion only of the base, and secured thereto.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a sur- I face covering comprising a base having overlying pattern elements of lmoleum mix secured to the base, the'base being exposed between pattern elements and lying at a lower level than the top surface of said pattern elements.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a surface covering comprising a base made up of a fabric web and having a substantiallycontinuously extending layer-of linoleum mix thereover, and pattern elements of linoleum mix overlying the base and secured thereto, the base being exposed between at least some of the pattern elements but a ma]o1 portion of the base being covered.
. face covering comprising a base made up 5. As a new article of manufacture, a surface covering comprising a base ,made up of a fabric web and having a substantially continuously extending layer of linoleum Imix thereover, said layer being of substantially uniform thickness, and pattern elements of linoleum mix overlying the base and secured thereto, the base being exposed between at least some of the pattern elements.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a surg o a fabric web and a substantially eontmu ously extending layer of linoleum mix thereover, and pattern elements of linoleum mix overlying the base, the pattern elements being in the form of tiles and the base being exposed between at least some of the pattern elements. 7
' 7.. As a new article of manufacture, a surface covering comprising a base made up of a fabric web, a substantially continuously extending layer of linoleum mix thereover, and pattern elements of linoleum mix overlying the base, the. pattern elements being relatively large in number, there being a.
plurality of such elements both crosswise. and longitudinally of the material, the base; being exposed betweenat least some of the pattern elements.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a surface covering comprising a base made up I and longitudinally of the material, the base of a fabric web, a substantially continuously extending layer of linoleum mix thereover, and pattern elements of linoleum mix overlyin the base, the pattern elements being re atively large in number, there being a plurality of such elements both crosswise being exposed between at least some of the
