Abstract

Metal powders are cleaned of superficial oxide coatings by heating the powder in a reducing atmosphere together with a small proportion of high boiling point completely volatile substance which is chemically stable under the conditions of heating, so that the substance distils off during the reduction process to prevent sintering of the powder. 0.3 to 2 per cent of a hydro-carbon, such as mineral oil, polybutene or paraffin may be used as the volatile substance and the reducing atmosphere may be pure hydrogen, dissociated ammonia or cracked illuminating gas. Heating may be effected at 350-650 DEG C in the case of copper, at 700-850 DEG C in the case of iron, and at 400 DEG C in the case of copper-lead powders. The process may be a batch or a continuous process and when the volatile substance is a solid or viscous liquid, it may be diluted or dissolved in a volatile solvent.
