Abstract
676,410. Induction heating. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Dec. 14, 1950 [Dec. 21, 1949], No. 30501/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(iii) A method of heating and forging metal bars consists in heating the end of the bar to a temperature considerably below forging temperature in an eddy current furnace, then shifting the bar therein to heat its end to forging temperature in one or more steps and an adjacent part to a temperature considerably below forging temperature, then cutting off the bar end and heating the said adjacent part to forging temperature. In one embodiment the total bar length is made twice the forged portion length and initially one half of the bar is heated to below forging temperature. The complete bar is then inserted into the furnace and the said half brought to forging temperature. This half is then forged and cut off leaving the remaining half to be further heated. A furnace may include a number of grooves for the reception of a series of bars and means for their automatic rejection, the number of grooves being dependent upon the relation between total heating time and the number of heating steps. Sequences of heating and forging operations with bars having lengths either two or three times the length of each forged part are described.
