Abstract

676,158. Washing - machines; wringers. TOSSELL, S. J. May 23, 1950, No. 12906(50. Class 138 (ii). A washing machine comprises means for forcing air into a container 1 and a lid 16 adapted when closed to form a water-tight seal with the container walls and provided with means for permitting the free passage of air, steam or suds from the container into a collecting or retaining recess formed in the lid. The container 1 has a floor 3 on which is detachably supported by sponge rubber blocks 8 a perforated detachable clothes-supporting plate 9. The space 10 between the floor 3 and plate 9 is connected to a drain cock 7, and by a pipe 11 to a rubber nozzle 14. A cage 15 surrounds the nozzle 14 to assist the attachment of the air pipe A of a blower which may be constituted by a domestic vacuum cleaner. The registration of holes 43 in the pipe 11 and the nozzle 14 is variable by rotation of the nozzle in order to adjust the volume or pressure of the air supply. The lid 16 of the container 1 comprises a peripheral flange 28 in which is disposed a rubber gasket 27 for engagement with the container wall. The base 16a of the lid is depressed to provide a receptacle for condensed steam from the container. Steam enters through holes 38 (which may be covered by gauze) and is guided by a baffle-plate 37 to pass through holes 41. A drainage hole 25 in the base of the lid is sealed by a rubber pad 26 on the container wall, in the closed position of the lid. When the lid is open, water thus drains back from the lid into the container. The lid is hinged at 18 and secured by a catch 19, 20 and may be supported in the open position, Fig. 4 (not shown), by the engagement of the end of an arm pivoted to the lid at its other end, with a stop 24 on the container. In its inoperative position the arm rests on a further stop (when the lid is closed). A flanged cover may be placed over the lid (and extends also over the pipe 11) so that the container may be used as a table when otherwise inoperative. The nozzle and cage are then accommodated in the lid. The cover is located relative to the flange of the lid by registering blocks rigid with the cover. A U-shaped bar, not shown, plugs into sockets on either side of the container in order to provide the mounting for a wringer. When inoperative, the bar is secured in sockets 32 (one only shown) on the underside of the lid bottom 16a. A gas or electric heating ring may be provided in the space 4.
