Abstract
676,097. Holding appliances for animals. GROSSMAN, A. Nov. 9, 1949 [Nov. 11, 1948], No. 29329/48. Class 81 (ii). An appliance for holding animals during slaughtering comprises a cage having adjustable sides and roof, mounted in a shell carried on two coaxial rings running on supporting rollers, so that the cage may be rotated about a longitudinal axis. In one form it comprises a floor 92, Fig. 1, with walls 101, 102 hinged along their bottom edges so that they can be set against the animal's sides. They are normally held apart by pawls 104, 105. The roof 59 may be lowered on to the animal's back by a suitable linkage. At the rear end there is a gate (not shown) and at the front end there is a door 53, Fig. 3, having a sliding panel 62, which may be raised against the neck. The whole of the cage thus formed is mounted in a drum having a circular rail 23 at each end running on rollers 12a, carried by a rigid base assembly 10. The drum is rotated by means of longitudinal hand rails and its motion may be controlled by a hand brake 27. In a modification the animal is held against the front door by a bar extending across the back of the cage and held in the appropriate position by notched bars, or a pivoted bar may be used for the same purpose. It is also proposed to make the roof in the form of a trolley, running on rails, to assist in removing the animal after slaughtering. The sides may be held in the closed position by a rack and pawl arrangement operated by a hand wheel, (see Fig. 5), (not shown).
