Abstract
675,638. Cable armouring. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Nov. 3, 1950 [Nov. 3, 1949], No. 26858/50. Class 36. An armoured lead sheathed cable has a bedding layer between the armouring and the sheath which contains a tape of soft lead alloy applied helically over the lead sheath, so as to afford a continuous electrical connection between the armouring and the sheath along the length of the cable. The lead sheath 14 is coated with an asphalt flooding compound 15 over which a lead alloy tape 16 and an impregnated paper tape 17 are tightly wound in alternate lays spaced apart from one another. A layer 18 of flooding compound is applied and a steel tape 19 wound tightly therearound in spaced apart lays. Two steel tapes 21, 22 are then tightly wound on in opposite directions with spaced apart lays over a layer 20 of flooding compound. In a modified arrangement for larger cables these two tapes are tightly wrapped on in the same direction, the outer tape overlapping the gaps between the turns of the inner. The metal tapes 16, 19 and 21 cut through the layers of flooding compound to establish contact with each other and with the lead sheath 14. The cable is completed with a jute roving 24 and a coating 26 of non-adhesive material.
