Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of partially condensed urea-formaldehyde resins, the colloidal particles of which carry a positive charge, are made by condensing urea or thiourea with formaldehyde in aqueous acid media by heat and adding to the aqueous media before, during or after the condensation a water soluble cation-active compound which comprises a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium group or a ternary sulphonium group having attached directly to the nitrogen, phosphorus or sulphur atom an alkyl group comprising a straight chain of at least 8 carbon atoms or a branched chain of at least 12 carbon atoms. Specified compounds are cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, octadecyl trimethyl ammonium sulphate, tetradecyl pyridinium bromide, cetyl triethyl phosphonium bromide and cetyl ethyl methyl sulphonium bromide. The aqueous dispersions of the resins may be prepared by refluxing 1 mol. of urea or thiourea with 2.0-3.0 mols. of formaldehyde for 1 hour at 98 DEG C. in an aqueous solution adjusted to pH 5.0 by acetic acid and with sodium acetate as buffer, adding the cation active compound in solid form or aqueous solution before, during or after the condensation and then neutralizing to pH 7 with caustic soda solution. The Specification contains IX examples of resins prepared as described above. The dispersions may be used to produce moistureproof films as described in Specification 675,475.
