Abstract

675,161. Hot gas engines. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSGHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPEN FABRIEKEN. Aug. 2, 1946 [Aug, 7, 1945], No. 23092/46. Class 7(i) [Also in Group XIII] In a hot gas engine comprising a heat exchanger provided with a cylindrical wall through which an exchange of heat between two media is required to take place one or each of the media is supplied to the wall through which heat exchange is required to take place by way of a large number of main supply channels extending in the same general direction and after making heat exchanging contact with the wall is carried off by way of a number of main outlet channels extending in the same general direction the supply and outlet channels opening within the heat exchanging area of the wall and the path traversed by the medium between a supply channel and an outlet channel having a maximum length of one third of the height of the heat exchanging part of the wall. As shown, Fig. 1, the heater of a hot gas engine includes an annular member 10 a portion of which is shown in perspective view in Fig. 2. The outer surface of the heater wall is heated by a burner not shown. The working medium displaced by the displacer flows into the annular member passes into channels 12. 14 as showm by the arrows and flows out of channels 13, 15. The gases flow in paths having a length f which is .very small with respect to the height d of the wall 11. In a modification of this arrangement in which manufacture is simplified the annular member is constructed of two concentric portions. In this construction it is stated that ridges may be provided on the inner surface of the hot space cylinder these ridges running around the cylinder in planes at right angles to its axis. In a further modification Fig. 5, numerous projections 31 are arranged on the inner surface of a wall 30 between this surface and a cylindrical shell (not shown). The working medium is forced by the displacer to pass between the wall and the shell and passes through the spaces between the projections. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 describes also a hot gas engine, Fig. 1, (Cancelled), in which the heater includes three rows of parallel channels 5,6, 7 through which the working medium of the engine passes .when a displacer is moed towards the cylinder head. The working medium flows along the underside of the head and through an annular space 4 surrounding a shell 2. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
