Abstract
674,712. Clutches. BABINOW, J. Sept. 20, 1950 [Nov. 10, 1949], No. 23080/50. Class 80 (ii). A magnetic fluid clutch comprises members 7, 9, Fig. 1, of magnetic material which are secured to the two shafts 5, 3 respectively and the axially-spaced.cylindrical peripheral surfaces 7<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP> of which together form the inner wall of an annular air gap 11, the outer wall of the gap being formed by a non-magnetic closed drum 8 integral with or secured to the shaft 3. An electro-magnetic coil 13 is carried by the member 9 and a groove 10 is provided in the drum 8. Sufficient iron powder is included in the ironoil mixture contained in the drum to fill the, groove 10 without touching the surfaces 7<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP>, with the coil de-energised, the powder being attracted to the surfaces 7', 9' when the coil is energised, so that the dutch releases quickly under centrifugal action when de-energised. In the multiple form shown in Fig. 3, the non- magnetic drum 18, integral with shaft 5, includes two perforated non-magnetic discs 17, 17<SP>1</SP> carrying magnetic cylindrical rings 20, 20<SP>1</SP> disposed in recesses in the magnetic member. 9a integral with shaft 3, the member 9a carrying two coils 13, 13'.
