Abstract

674,668. Centrifugal machines. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR AKT.-GES. March 20, 1950 [April 23, 1949], No. 6857/50. Class 23 In a method for the centrifugal separation and extraction of liquids by plant operating on the counter-current principle, the liquids are mixed in the stripping chambers of centrifugal separators connected in cascade. A separator for use in the above method comprises two stripping chambers 8, 9, and a stationary shaft 14 which extends beyond the centrifugal drum, is provided with supply and discharge channels and is surrounded by a stationary annular channel 27 extending into the upper stripping chamber 9, and serving as a supply passage for a liquid to be added to the mixture. The drum has a nest of plates 5, a distributer 4 and a separator plate 7. The shaft 14 has stripping discs 15, 16, for the light and heavy liquids respectively and a collar 19 to connect the channel within the shaft to the external feed and delivery lines. A solution such as phenolated water, which constitutes the heavy liquid and is shown in solid lines, is fed to the drum through a passage 20 together with a solvent such as butyl acetate which is shown in broken lines. The solution, less the phenol content yielded to the solvent, is discharged through the stripping disc 16 and a bore 26 together with a fresh supply of solvent fed thereto through a bore 27. The butyl acetate-phenol mixture is discharged through the disc 15 and a bore 25 together with phenolated water fed thereto through a bore 28. In a modification, the bores 27, 28 terminate at a point below the discs 16, 15, respectively, whilst the conduit 24 delivers to a point above the disc 16. Again, both liquids may be fed to the stripping chamber on the same side of the stripping discs.
