Abstract
674,573. Sparking plugs. TALALMANYOKAT ERTEKESITO N.V. July 19, 1950 [July 20, 1949], No. 18062/50. Class 7(iv) In a sparking plug comprising a body 1, Fig. 1, an insulated centre electrode 5. an earthed electrode 17a, 17b, carried bv the body 1 and a parallel-sided slot formed in the active surface of at least one of the electrodes, such as that formed between the two earthed elec. trodes 17a, 17b, the width of the slot is arranged to bE smaller than the length of the spark gap. The plug body 1 has a bi-conica: bore 3, and the centre electrode 5 extends upwardly from the throat o: the bore into a terminal 4 pro vided with cooling fins 10. A vitreous silica tube 6, which abuts the termina 4 and the lower part 1 of the plug body and has pack ing rings 8 inter posed therebetween, surrounds, but is spaced from he middle portion of the centre electrode 5 whilst the assembly is held together by a loop member 12 pivotally mounted in the part 1 and urging an insulating member 11 into contact with the terminal 4; the loop member 12 may be adjusted by a screw 13. Across the bottom of the bore 3 is arranged the two earthed electrodes 17a, 17b, so that during the compression stroke combustible mixture from the cylinder enters the member 6 and during the expansion stroke the combustion products issue at great velocity and thereby remove any oil drops between the rods 17a a and 17b. In a modification, as applied to a screened plug the loop member is dispensed with and the centre electrode 18, Fig. 4, is mounted in a mica ring 19 located between two tubular members 20 and 21 of transparent material, such as quartz whilst the earthed electrode is made up of four parts 22a, 22d, Fig 5, separated by spaces 0 each part embodying a slot 23 which is smaller than the length of the sparking gap x, Fig. 4. The plug shell 29 incorporates openings which are covered by wire gauze to enable the flame to be viewed. In another modification, both electrodes are slotted.
