Abstract

Olefine oxides are prepared by reacting the olefine, e.g ethylene, with oxygen at 150-400 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising silver or a silver compound deposited on the surface, preferably roughened surface, of a spherical support, e.g. fused alumina, aluminium silicate, magnesia, silicon carbide, zirconia or beryllium porcelain (see Group III).ALSO:A catalyst for the oxidation of olefines comprises silver or a silver compound deposited on the surface of a spherical support. The support is preferably non-porous and its surface is preferably roughened so as to have iregularities of an approximate depth of 0.005 to 0.05 inch. The support may comprise fused alumina, aluminium silicate, magnesia, silicon carbide, zirconia or beryllium-porcelain. The spherical supports may be prepared by shaping the material into cylinders, then tumbling them into a spherical shape, then tumbling with a volatilizable powder, e.g. naphthalene, and finally roasting to drive off the powder and to leave a roughened surface. Impregnation of the support with silver may be effected by precipitating silver oxide thereon, roasting and then reducing with hydrogen.
