Abstract
517,333. Preparation of catalysts. CARBIDE & CARBON CHEMICALS CORPORATION. July 23, 1938, Nos. 21873 and 21874. Convention dates, Aug. 7, 1937, and July 12, 1938. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] In the direct oxidation of olefines to olefine oxides at temperatures between 150‹C. and 400‹C., the catalyst consists essentially of silver together with one or more of the peroxides, hydroxides or oxides of barium, strontium or lithium. The catalyst may be in the form of pellets, small rods, or supported on granular material, e.g., silica filter stone, sandstone or an alumina refractory material, and the promoting material is used in amounts of 2-40 per cent. by weight of the silver present, preferably about 10 per cent. In the examples given, the catalysts are prepared by stirring a mixture of a suitable support, silver oxide and water, with or without a suitable amount of promoter, and heating until all the water is evaporated. The examples describe the oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide, and compare the results obtained with (1) silver alone (2) silver and 10 per cent. of barium peroxide (3) silver and 10 per cent. of strontium hydroxide (4) silver and 10 per cent. of lithium hydroxide (5) silver and 10 per cent. of potassium or caesium hydroxides (6) silver and 10 per cent. of calcium hydroxide. Also catalysts containing magnesium or aluminium hydroxides are referred to. Catalysts containing promoters other than barium, strontium or lithium are stated to give low yields or become rapidly poisoned. If desired, hydrogen peroxide may be added with the metal hydroxides, and also barium carbonate or'chloride in the presence of sufficient ethylene oxide and moisture become active as promoters.
