Abstract

Catalytic pellets are moulded from a mixture comprising: (a) a finely divided inorganic oxide at least potentially active but in non-gelatinous form selected from alumina, beryllia, zirconia, thoria, silica and combinations thereof; (b) colloidal silica; and (c) a water-soluble metal salt decomposable by heat into the metal oxide of the above group, the decomposition of said salt being carried out after moulding said pellets. The colloidal silica is preferably employed so that the pellets contain 2 to 8 per cent. of silica by weight, and the silica has an average size in the range of 10 to 150 millimicrons. The pellets are made preferably from a finely divided inorganic oxide which has a specific surface of at least 60,000 cm.2/cm.3. Among the elements which may be deposited upon this catalytic bases are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, nickel, copper, cobalt, chronium and silver. U.S.A.
