In the production of formaldehyde by the air oxidation of methanol using a silver crystal catalyst, the catalyst is reactivated by removing the surface thereof, e.g. by wire brushing, and replacing it with a new surface of fresh silver crystals. About 5 to 20% of the silver may be removed and replaced by up to 50% by weight of the catalyst of fresh crystals.
