Abstract
N,N-dimethylacetamide is used as a solvent for polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer of acrylonitrile with one or more other monomers in which at least 70 per cent of the polymeric content is acrylonitrile. The other monomer may be vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, dimethyl fumarate or methyl methacrylate. The solution may be extruded into fibres by dry spinning, e.g. using air, steam, nitrogen or mixtures, or wet spinning methods, e.g. using water, alcohol, salt solutions or a mixture of water and the sodium salt of a sulphonated alkyl benzene. The fibres may be stretched, e.g. in a bath of glycerine or by drawing the fibres out more rapidly than the extrusion rate. Specification 655,748 is referred to.
