Class 45 Means for straining ropes and the like on vehicles comprises a pair of brackets A each containing a screwed spindle B mounted for rotation and fixed against endwise movement, one end of each spindle having means C for engagement with a detachable operating handle, one spindle having a left-hand thread and'the other a right-hand thread on which travelling nuts F are mounted, the nuts slidably engaging the brackets and each having a loop G for connection to the rope. Rotation of the nuts is prevented by the loops G engaging slots in the brackets. The two screwed spindles are coupled together so that when they are rotated the nuts F move in opposite direction.
