Class 75(iii) A pyrophoric lighter comprises means for causing both the flint and a spring- pressed flint-follower which is longitudinally movable in a freely rotatable flint holder to rotate with the latter. A horizontal flint tube 7 is provided with two internal, longitudinal slots or grooves 10 engaged by projections 13 of a spring- urged flint-follower 12, which makes a straight-line contact with the flint 4. Forward movement of the follower 12 is limited by the engagement of the projections 13 with the ends of the grooves 10. In an alternative arrangement the grooves 10 are dispensed with, the flint tube and follower being the same polygonal shape in cross section. The forward end of the flint spring 14 is secured to the flint follower while the rear end pushes on a plug 16 fixed in a slidable sleeve 18, the flanged rear face 17 of which is normally held flush with the rear of the casing 1 by the engagement of a projection 22 on a spring-controlled pushrod 21 with an annular groove 23 in the sleeve 18. The forward end of the sleeve 18 engages over the rear of the flint tube 7. To insert a new flint the rod 21 is pushed in whereupon the spring 14 pushes out the flange 17 so that the flint follower assembly can be withdrawn to expose a flint-inserting aperture 11 in the flint tube 7. In a modification the flint tube extends to the rear of the casing, and has an internal longitudinal groove in which a projection 13, Fig. 7, on the flint-follower 12, engages. The groove communicates at the rear end of the tube with a slot having a lateral extension in which a pin 33, on an end plug 32 engages. The pin 33 is set further round than the projection 13 so that a slight torque in the spring holds the pin in said lateral extensions. The whole assembly shown in Fig. 7, is withdrawn from the flint tube for insertion of a new flint into the rear of the tube. A spring-pressed pawl pivoted in the cap 2 of the lighter engages a ratchet wheel 9 at the forward end of the flint tube, the arrangement being such that the latter, together with the flint follower 12 and flint 4, is rotated either as the cap is raised, or as the cap is lowered. Alternatively the flint tube may be connected by gearing to the thumb wheel 6 or 626,585 and 672,310 are referred to in the second Provisional Specification.
