672,272. Making tubes and cable sheaths. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., and GRIEVE, G. T. W. Aug. 29, 1950 [Aug. 29, .1949], No. 22399/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Skelping; welding; drawing.-In a continuous method of making a metal tube or cable sheath by folding a strip to an oversize tube and scan welding the longitudinal edges, the tube is reduced to the required size and given smooth internal and external surfaces by drawing through an annular orifice of gradually diminishing internal and external diameter. In a method of forming an aluminium or copper cable sheath the strip is bent over a welding shoe 1 supported within the tube by an arm 3 passing radially through the gap between the edges 5 of the strip. The shoe 1 has a tubular passage for the cable core 8 and its nose 10 forward of the welding point 7 has a conically tapered external surface 9 which determines the internal diameter of the tube 2a. A drawing-die 12 surrounds the end of the shoe and has a conically tapered inner surface 13 spaced from the conical surface 9 to determine the thickness and final external diameter of the tube. The edges 5 of the strip may be arc welded in an argon gas shield or may be resistance welded by roller electrodes.
