Abstract
1,119,293. Making electric cables; welding by fusion or pressure. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 22 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 54639/65. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division H1] A metal sheath is formed from a strip of metal 8 round a paper-insulated conductor 1 and sealed by welding along the longitudinal or a helical seam. The conductor to be sheathed passes from an evacuated or inert gas-filled dryer 3 into an evacuated or inert gas-filled forming chamber 5 which contains rollers 6 for forming the strip metal into a tubular sheath of diameter larger than that of the core. The sheathed core enters an evacuated or inert gas-filled welding chamber 14 where the seam is either electron-beam or arc welded. Induction or high frequency resistance welding may be used instead. Pressure rolls are used for cold pressure welding aluminium. A pipe 15 connected to a pump 16 maintains the vacuum inside the sheath. After welding the cable enters the atmosphere via a running seal 17.
