Abstract

1,140,274. Sheathing cable; angular bending; corrugating; welding by fusion. KABELUND METALLWERKE GOTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE A.G. 5 Aug., 1966 [11 Aug., 1965], No. 35206/66. Headings B3A, B3E and B3R. [Also in Division H1] An electric cable with a sheath of composite metal strip to provide high conductivity and a magnetic shield is made by feeding an insulated conductor 11 and a composite metal strip 16 to a forming station 22 where the strip is formed into a tube with a longitudinal seam around the conductor 11. The strip is fed to the forming station through a degreasing tank 20 and is formed into tubular form by skelping rollers 81<SP>1</SP>, 82<SP>1</SP>, 83<SP>1</SP>. The strip is preferably made of laminations of stainless steel or mild steel and copper. The edges of the composite strip 16 are held in abutting relation by rollers 32. The seam is heated by means of an electrode 36. A shielding gas is blown over the region of the weld from a nozzle 40. The sheathed cable can be circumferentially corrugated. The core 10 may comprise individually insulated conductors 110 located in an insulating jacket 112. The heating during the welding process is limited in order to avoid melting of the insulation, the heating being sufficient to melt the copper but not the ferrous layer. The finished cable is advanced by grippers (44), Fig. 1b (not shown).
