Abstract

671,630. Road-traffic signals on vehicles. HOLLINS, J. R. July 25, 1950. [Sept. 17, 1949] No. 18574/50. Class 118 (ii). In a vehicle signalling system, the clearance lamp group 20 or 20<SP>1</SP> on the appropriate side of the vehicle is flashed at an increased level of illumination to indicate a turn. At night, switch 10 is placed with handle 19 in the position shown and both groups of lamps are illuminated at a low level by connections extending through switch arms 16, 17 and resistors 23, 23<SP>1</SP>. To indicate a left turn, the arm is moved clockwise through one position, the connection to group 20 then extending through arm 13 to contact 21 and that to group 20' through arm 14 and contact 31<SP>1</SP>. Group 20 continues at a low level whilst group 20<SP>1</SP> is illuminated at a high level and flashed intermittently by a flasher unit 30<SP>1</SP>. To indicate a right turn the arm is moved in the anticlockwise direction where group 20<SP>1</SP> continues at a low level whilst group 20 is flashed at. a high level by flasher 30. Tell-tale lamps 25, 25<SP>1</SP> are operated from relays 40, 40<SP>1</SP> in series with the flasher units. For day operation, switch 15 is reversed by placing handle 18 in the uppermost position. Contacts 20, 21<SP>1</SP> are no longer engaged by arms 16, 17 and the lamp groups are only connected in circuit when a turn is signalled. Preferably, arm 14 is so designed that when the switch is in the "day" position, the arm 14 will not engage contact 21 or 21<SP>1</SP>. To indicate an emergency stop, the switch is rotated through two positions until contacts 36 and 36<SP>1</SP> are engaged by arms 13 and 14 whereupon both groups of lamps are flashed at the high level.
