Abstract

671,539. Gas turbine plant. SVENSKA TURBINFABRIKS AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROM. Jan. 13, 1950 [Jan. 19, 1949], No. 926/50. Class 110 (iii) An open circuit gas turbine plant comprising a turbine 15, Fig. 1, a combustion chamber 11 or recuperator and a compressor unit 2 separately driven independently of the turbine has one or more accumulators for storing air supplied by the compressor unit which is admitted to the turbine according to need. Each accumulator consists of a chamber 8 connected at its lower portion through a channel 10 with a body of water 9, the level of which is comparatively high as compared with the change of level of the water in the accumulator, and at its top with the compressor and turbine. The compressor unit 2 is driven by an electric motor 1 and during air charging periods the valves 4 and 6 are open and the valve 5 closed. When air is withdrawn from the accumulator, valves 5 and 6 are opened and valve 4 may be open or closed depending on whether the compressor unit 2 is in operation. Liquid fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber by a pump 12. Valves 5 and fuel supply valves 14 are controlled by a speed governor 18. In a modification, two accumulators are provided. The second accumulator is used to store combustible gas supplied by a compressor driven by an electric motor. In. another embodiment water is sprayed into the combustion chamber and the amount of water injected is controlled by the speed governor 18. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the combustion chamber 11 is replaced by a recuperator 27. The heat resistant material 28 of high heat capacity is heated by combustion gases from a combustion chamber 30 in which a liquid or solid fuel may be burnt. These gases leave the chamber 30 through a conduit 33. When the recuperator is supplying heat to the air from the compressor the valves 29 and 34 are closed and the valve 5 opened. The temperature of the gases supplied to the' turbine is controlled by a thermostat which actuates a valve 26 regulating the amount of water sprayed into the recuperator.
