Abstract

671,485. Chucks. LONG, E. T. Sept. 20, 1950 [Sept. 20, 1949], No. 24178/49. Class 83 (iii). A chuck, particularly for small tools such as dental drills or engraving tools, comprises a hollow body 1 secured to a mandrel 3 and having several internal cam surfaces 4, a corresponding number of rollers 5 engaging the cam surfaces, and resilient means 7 directly engaging the rollers and tending to urge them towards the axis of the chuck so that a drill 11 is lightly gripped by the rollers before being fully gripped by the action of the cam surfaces when the chuck is rotating. The resilient means may comprise a coiled spring 7 having one or more convolutions and it may engage a reduced portion in the middle of each roller or a spigot at one end of each roller; spigots at both ends of the rollers and two springs may also be employed. The cam surfaces may be ratchet-shaped or, for transmitting torque in both directions, the internal surface of the body may be of sinuous configuration. For guiding the drill into the chuck, the nose 9 of the body has a bore 10 and the ends of the rollers are slightly radiused. The chuck is housed in a sleeve which may be either rotary or stationary; in the latter case, the sleeve may be attached to the outer casing of a flexible shaft. The Provisional Specification describes also holes in the nose of the body in which the rollers are guided.
