Abstract
671,224. Coining. TAYLOR & CHALLEN, Ltd. July 12, 1950 [July 12, 1949], No. 18427/49. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXIV] A rotary feed mechanism for a coining press comprises a feed plate 20 having apertures 22, 22a, &c. for receiving, with clearance, a succession of blanks to be fed, the plate being arranged to be located during pressing so that one of the dies 12 can pass through the aperture 22a. The plate 20 rotates above a stationary table 21 which supports the coin blanks in the apertures, and has an opening 23, with a milled collar 24, leading to the bottom die 12. The feed plate is rotated by a Geneva wheel mechanism to a first position to deliver a coin blank into the opening 23 and is then reversed into a second position by means of a spiral land 54 on the pin wheel 50 so that the walls of the aperture 22 are clear of the edges of the opening 23, the upper die then moving down to stamp the coin blank. The upper die is then retracted and the coin ejected to table-top level by upward movement of the lower die 12, whence it is carried by forward rotation of the feed plate to an outlet 25 leading to a hopper 26. A circular extension 57 of the land 54 co-operates with recesses 58 on the wheel 52 to lock the feed plate during stamping. The slots 56 in the wheel 52 are shaped at their ends to ensure that retardation of the plate on coming into its first position is sufficiently early to ensure that the blank comes up against the rear wall of the aperture. Alternatively the blank may be held against the rear wall of the aperture by a pivoted arm operated by centrifugal force on rotation of the feed plate, or by a spring finger, Figs. 5 and 6 respectively (not shown), the holding means being disengaged at the appropriate time by engagement with abutments.
