Abstract
671,016. Forging-machines. WATERBURY FARREL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO. Aug. 25, 1950 [April 18, 1950], No. 21066/50. Class 83 (iv). Blanks, transferring.- A metal - working machine having a plurality of dies has a workpiece transfer mechanism comprising a carrier having mounted thereon a spindle carrying gripping fingers which is rotated as the carrier moves from one die to another. A machine for forming nuts comprises a die block 11 in which are dies 12 to 16 which co-operate with punches (not shown) to perform the various operations. A reciprocable cut-off bar 17 carrying a knife 18 cuts off and feeds wire stock to the die 12. Mounted on the die-block 11 is a gear housing 20 containing a hub 22 carrying gear segments 23 and 24 and crank-shafts 28, 29 on which are pinions 30 and 31 which engage the gear segments 23 and 24, respectively. Crank-pins 33 on the shafts 28, 29 are secured in bearings 40 to a carrier comprising spaced riveted plates 35 and 36. Stop-pins 44 and adjustable screws 45 limit the movement of the cranks so that the fingers 73 and 84 are correctly aligned with the die opening. The hub 22 is rotated by a rockarm 48 connected to an adjustable rod 49 which is reciprocated by mechanism connected to and operated by the cut-off bar 17. Rotation of the hub 22 oscillates the crank-shafts 28 and 29and the carrier and fingers 73 and 84. The spring- loaded fingers 73 are secured to holders 72 pivoted at 71 to a block 69 mounted on the carrier. Horizontal adjustment of the fingers is effected by screws 78 and 79 in the holders 72. The spring-loaded fingers 84 are rotatable and are carried by a holder 83 on a spindle 82 vertically mounted in a block 81 secured to the carrier. On the upper end of the spindle 82 is a pinion 87 and a plate 88 on the housing cover 21 carries spaced racks 89 and spaced bearing plates 90 which co-operate with square blocks 91 formed integrally with each pinion 87. Upon oscillation of cranks 32 the pinions 87 and blocks 91 will be raised and moved towards the right (Fig. 6), the blocks 91 riding on the bearing-plates 90 and when the blocks leave the plates 90 the pinions engage the racks 89, thus rotating the fingers 84 through 180 degrees whilst transferring the work-piece from one station to the next. The carrier is prevented from moving outwardly from the die face by lugs 92 (Fig. 5), which engage a slot 93 in the die-block. The stroke of the cranks 32 may be adjusted by means of a stud 97 (Fig. 1), which adjusts the throw of a lever 51.
