Abstract

670,791. Mounting electric motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 30, 1950 [May 20, 1949], No. 13511/49. Class 79 (iii). In an axle-hung electric traction motor wherein the motor casing is built up, the suspension bearings are carried by integral extensions of the motor frame and plates. As shown, the motor casing is built up from formed plates welded together along axially extending seams to form a box having integral axially extending lugs 2 which engage corresponding notches in the end plates 4, to which they are welded. Extensions 4a of the end plates carry housings 9 for roller bearing suspension, end caps 10 and bolts 11 secure the housings 9. With this construction the welded joints do not carry the weight of the motor. The other side of the motor may be supported from a frame cross member 18 by links 19 and a bar 16 notched into and welded to the motor end plates 4. The axle is driven from the motor armature through a reduction gear housed in the casing 15.
