Abstract
7421. British Thomson-Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. April 7. Electric locomotive and motor vehicles.-Relates to electrically propelled vehicles in which each driving-axle is provided with two motors connected in series, and consists in mounting each motor so that it may rotate about the axle within certain limits independently of the other. Fig. 1 shows a plan, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of one form. The motor B is supported at one end on the axle A by means of-projecting arms 1 having bushed bearings, preferably provided with detachable caps on the undersides. The motor C is similarly provided with projecting arms 7 having bearings which rest on cylindrical bosses 9 projecting laterally from the arms 1. The ends of the motors remote from the axle are suitably supported from the frame E by bars 16, 17, and springs 18. The motors are provided with pinions b, c, which preferably mesh directly with a pinion A', secured to the axle A. The gearing is enclosed by a casing D, supported directly upon one motor C, and formed with an elongated hole, through which the shaft of the other motor passes. A modification is shown, in which one motor is journalled directly upon the axle as before, but the other motor is hung from trunnions supported in the outer ends of the arms projecting from the first motor.
