To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonen H. F. HOLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to locomotives, and particularly to industrial locomotives for service in mines.
One object of my invention is to provide a locomotive having a single propelling unit which is directly connected to two driving axles in an improved'manner to permit vertical rotative movement of the axles relative to each other, and tothus permit the locomotive to accommodate itself to various track irregularities.
More specifically, my invention embodies a locomotive of the above-indicated.char' acter which is provided with two axles having driving wheels mounted thereon, an auxiliary frame having a two-point support on one of said axles and a pivotal support on the other axle, anda motor mounted on said frame and having adriving connection with each of said axles.
In an industrial locomotive having two pair-sot wheels, it is very desirable to apply power to each pair of wheels in order to'increase the efiiciency of the locomotive. Although in many cases a separate driving unit is connected to each axle, it is preterable to have a single driving unit connected to the two axles in order to reduce the cost of the locomotive.
Moreover, in a locomotive of thc-above-indicated character, it is very desirable to per mit the various axles to effect vertical rotative movements relative to each other in order to insuregood tracking characteristics of the locomotive. However, when a locomotive is provided with a singledriving unit connected to two axles, special provision must be made to permit said relative'movement between the two axles. I
There have'heretotore been two principal types of locomotives having "but a single driving motor. In the one type, the single motor has been geared-to one pair of driving wheels and side rods have been employed for connectingiall of the pairs otdriving wheels. In the other type the motor has beengeared to one axle. and a flexible connection, as for example, a chain has been employed betweenthe two axles. Although these two types of locomotives permit relative vertical movement of the two axles, they are-objectionable because ofthe largenumber of moving parts that are necessary for interconnecting the two pairs of driving wheels and because of the danger to the men who operate them.
In a'locomotive constructed in accordance with my invention a single motor is'geared to and is mounted on the two axles in an improved manner to transmit the driving effort of the motor to the axles and to permit one of said axles to effect a vertical rotative movement relative to the other axle. l
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 1s a plan view of a locomotive constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevational viewof the locomotive illus trated in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of an auxiliary frame that supports one end of the motor-supporting frame. 7
Referring to the accompanying drawing, a locomotive l is provided with two pairs of driving wheels 2 and 3 which arer'eSp'eC- tlvely mounted upon the axles 4L and Side frames 6 having cross connections 7 therebe tween are mounted on the axles & and 5' outside the driving wheels 2 and 3' in any convenient and approved manner. However, if desired, the relative positions of the side frames 6 and the driving wheels may be changed.
A motor supporting-frame 8 is mounted upon the axles st and 5between the pairs of driving wheelsQ and 3 in a mannerto permit the axle 5 to effecta movement or retation relative to the axle 4c in a vertical plane. The frame 8 is provided with a two point support'o'n the axle 4 by means of bearings 9 and l0,the bearing caps for the bearings Sand 10 being locatedbelow the axle. i in order to prevent} the caps from carrying the weight of theirame 8. An auxiliary supporting frame 11, essentially rectangular in shape, has supporting bearings 12 and 13 on the axle 5. A bearing 1 1 and a short shaft 15 are provided on the frame 11, located transversely to the bearings 12 and 13: ,Thestub shaft 15 is'mount ed in the bearing 15, thus bringing the hearing 1% adjacent to the cross member 8.
A motor 16, which is mounted upon the frame 8, is provided with a pinion17 which meshes with a gear wheel 18 that is rigidly mounted upon a shaft 19. The shaft 19 is mounted in bearings 20 and 21 upon the frame 8 and is provided with beveled pinions 22 and 23 near its ends, the pinions meshing with beveled gears 24 and 25 that are rigidly mounted upon the axles 4t and 5. The bearing 21 which supports the shaft 19 on the frame'B is provided with an extended bearing brass 26 upon whichthe bearing 1& of the auxiliary frame 11'is loosely mounted. The bearings 12 and 13 for supporting .the auxiliary frame 11 on the axle 5, and the bearings 14 and 15, it maybe noted, provide in effect a double pivotal connection for the frame 8 uponthe axle 5. The part of frame 8 connected to and adjacent to'the axle 4 may have a lllllll' ing'movement relativeto axle 5, in a vertical plane parallel to the rails, by means of the bearings 12 and 13 mounted on the axle 5. The axle 5 and the auxiliary frame 11 may have aturning movement relative to the axle a. and the frame 8,.in a vertical plane at right angles to the rails, by means of the pivotal. connection between the frame 8' and the'auxiliary frame. 11, provided by the bearings 15and l4 and-the shaft 15* and the bearing brass 26. The caps for the bearings '14, 15, 20 and 21 are located underneath the "locomotive in order to permit the dismantling of the bearings with facility.
From the above descriptiomit is apparent that the axle 5 may effect a rotative movement relative to the axle 4 about a point alinedwith the shaft 19 and in a vertical plane at right angles to the rails without" interfering with the transmission of the driving eifort of the motor through the beveled pinions and, the beveled gear Wheels to the two axles. Although the frame 8 is directly connected to the axles 4 and 5 by means of the shaft 19, the beveled pinions 22a-nd 23, and the beveled gears 24c'and 25, it is apparent that the frame 8. is provided with the equivalent of a three-point support on the axles 1 and 5 and the axle 5 may effect a movementof rotation relative to the'frame 8 in a vertical plane by reason of the beveled pinion 23 and the beveled gear 25 being joined at point within the axis about which theaxle 5 will rotate.
Modifications the structure and, ar-
rangement and location of parts may-be made within the spirit and scope of my.invention and such modifications are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having driving wheels mounted and for so pivotally supporting the motor on the other of said axles as to permit both a bodily vertical movement and a pivotal movement of said axle in a transverse per pendicular plane. r
2. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having-driving wheels mounted thereon, a motor, and means for transmit ting the driving effort of the motor to the two driving wheels, of means for pivotally supporting the motor on one of said axles for vertical movement and for so pivot-ally supporting the motor on the second axle as to permit both a bodily vertical movement and a pivotal movement of said axle in a transverse vertical plane.
3. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having side frames and driving wheels mounted-thereon, a motor, and means comprising gear wheels for transmitting the driving effort of the motor to the two-axles, of a supporting frame for said motor having a two-point support on one of said axles and a pivotal support on the other of saidaxles,-so as to permit relative movement of the parts and constantly maintaining driving-I connection with said motor.

In an electric locomotive, the combination with two axles having driving wheels connected thereto'a-nd a propelling motor, of a plurality of gear wheels for connecting said motor to the two axles, and means for so pivotally supporting the motor on one of said axles as to constantly maintain driving connection therebetween. 5. In an electric locomotive, the combination with'two axles having driving wheels mounted thereon anda propelling motor, of means comprising a plurality of gear wheels for connecting said motor to said axles, and means for pivotally supporting said motor and the connecting means at tarhed theretoon one of said axles and for pivotal support on the other axle whereby one of said axles may move bodily vertically and about said pivotal support in a single plane, a motor mounted on said frame and means for transmitting the driving effort of the motor to the'driving wheels associ ated with the two axles.
7. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having driving wheels mounted thereon, side frames mounted on said axles outside the driving wheels, and a motor frame located inside of said driving wheels and pivotally supported on one of said axles, of a motor mounted on said motor frame, an auxiliary frame pivotally mounted on said motor frame and supported by one axle and means mounted on the motor frame for transmitting the driving effort of the motor to the axles.
8. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having driving wheels mounted thereon, and a propelling motor connected to each of said axles, of means for so pivotally supporting the motor on one of said axles as to constantly maintain driving connection therebetween.
9. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles, driving wheels mounted on said axles, a propelling motor, and means for transmitting the driving effort of the motor to the driving wheels, of means for so supporting the motor on both of said axles as to admit of a plurality of movements of one of said axles in a transverse perpendicular plane.
10. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having driving wheels mounted thereon, and a supporting frame disposed between said driving wheels, said frame having a pivotal support on one of said axles and a two point pivotal support on the other of said axles, of a shaft mounted on said frame, gear wheels for connecting said shaft to the two axles, a motor mounted on said frame, and gear wheels for connecting the motor to said shaft for transmitting the driving effort of the motors to both of said shafts.
11. The combination with two axles and means for operatively connecting both of them for rotation together, operating means for said connecting means, of means for so supporting said first means at two different points on one ofsaid axles and on the other of said axles as to permit relative move ment of the parts and constantly maintaining driving connection with said operating means.
12. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles having driving wheels mounted thereon, a motor f 'ame pivoted to one of said axles, a motor carried thereby, means for transmitting the driving effort of the motor to two driving axles, means pivotally connected to one of said axles, and means permitting relative vertical and pivotal movements of said axles in vertical planes.
13. In a vehicle having a pair of rotatable axles, a motor frame pivotally mounted on one of said axles and mechanically connectedto said other axle, and a supporting frame pivotally mounted 011 said other axle and pivotally supporting said motor frame.
14. A locomotive provided with a motor frame, a motor carried thereby for driving connection to two axles, one of said axles being mounted for both a bodily vertical movement and apivotal movement in a transverse perpendicular plane and constantly maintaining the driving connection with said motor.
15. In a locomotive, the combination of a plurality of axles, a motor frame supported therefrom, a motor mounted thereon, and means for permitting one of said axles to move both vertically in a horizontal position and in a vertically transverse plane about a pivot and for constantly maintaining driving connection with said motor.
16. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles, a motor frame pivotally mounted on one of said axles, a motor mounted on said frame, an auxiliary frame having a two-point longitudinally pivotal support on said motor frame and a two-point transverse support on the other of said axles, and means for operatively connecting both of said axles with said motor.
17 In a locomotive, the combination with two axles, a motor frame pivotally mounted on one of said axles, a motor mounted on said frame, an auxiliary frame having a two-point longitudinally pivotal support on said motor frame and a two-point transverse support on the other of said axles,'and means for operatively connecting one of said axles with said motor.
18. In a locomotive, the combination with two axles, a motor frame pivotally mounted on one of said axles, a motor mounted on said frame, an auxiliary frame having a two-point longitudinally pivotal support on said motor frame and a two-point transverse support on the other of said axles, and means for constantly maintaining the operative connection between said axles and said motors.
