Abstract
670,598. Tubular heat exchangers. BROWN FINTUBE CO. July 11, 1949 [Nov. 20, 1948], No. 18256/49. Class 64(iii) An air cooler interposed between two spaced aligned sections 10, 11 of an air line comprises a shell tube 16 having its longitudinal axis disposed at an angle to the axis of the air line sections, and having an open end and a closed end, the open end being directly connected to one section (10) of the air line and a conduit 25 connecting the shell tube near its closed end to the other section 11 of the air line, cooling means being disposed within the shell tube for cooling the air passing therethrough. In the form shown, the cooling means comprises a finned tube 30 detachably connected to the closed end of the shell tube and closed at the end remote therefrom, cooling fluid (e.g. water) being passed into the finned tube 30 through a coaxial bayonet tube 34 and flowing back through the annular space between the tubes 30, 34 to the discharge conduit 42. Air to be cooled passes from the air line section 10 through the shell tube 16, and through the conduit 25 to the airline section 11 leading to an accumulator or receiver. Entrained moisture in the air passing through the cooler collects in the sump 45 and to cause this entrained moisture to be thrown outwards on to the wall of the shell, the fins on the tube 30 may be helical, Fig. 4, or axially spaced groups 31b of fins having their ends bent may be provided, Fig. 5. A plurality of finned tubes each having a coaxial bayonet tube may be incorporated in the shell tube instead of the single finned tube shown. The finned tube or tubes 30 may be of the type described in Specification 670,574 in which the fins are formed from channel-section members having their bases welded to the tube. The fins may engage the interior of the shell tube 16.
