Abstract
670,337. Making burners. MAIN WATER HEATERS, Ltd. Jan. 4, 1950 [Jan. 4, 1949], No. 223/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XI] Punching.-A multi-jet gas burner comprises a tube for receiving at one end 10, Fig. 2, a supply of gas and formed with holes of different areas spaced apart along the length thereof with the smaller area holes nearer the end 10, which holes are part circular and are of equal diameters but have segmental blanking portions 13, of different sizes. Each hole may vary in area from its neighbour or a succession of adjacent holes may be of the same area and followed by a succession of holes of a different area followed by another succession of still different area and so on. The hole or succession of holes most remote from the end 10 may be circular. The burner tube may be perforated by means of a punching press comprising a reciprocable head 16, Fig. 5, carrying a plate 14 having two flanges 17 to one of which is secured by screws 22 a gripping member 18, and to the other are attached by individual adjusting screws 23 a number of separate gripping jaws 19. The gripping member 18 and the jaws 19 are provided with V-shaped grooves for engaging the punch stems, the ends of which abut against a cast steel insert 21, punches being generally cylindrical but ground at the operating end to the required size and shape. A plate 24 and an intervening rubber layer 9 extend across the outer faces of the members 18, 19 and are provided with holes for the passage of the punches, the ends of the latter being normally masked by the plate 24. The holder for the burner tube comprises gripping members 25, 26, Fig. 7, having part cylindrical grooves 32, 33 for receiving the burner tube. The member 25 is rigidly secured by screws 28 to a base member 27 secured to a platen 35 provided with guide rods 36 for the reciprocable head 16, whilst the member 26 is adjustable by a screw 29 the end of which engages a thrust race 30 within the member 26.
