670,053. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. (Haas, H.). Oct. 2, 1950 [Oct. 1, 1949], No. 25290/49. Class 103 (i). In an internal shoe brake for vehicles of the self-energizing type in which two floating shoes 4 are articulated together at their ends remote from the shoe separating means 2 bv means of two links 5 and 6, each pivotally connected at one end to a shoe and the other ends of the links being connected to each other and to the free end of an arm 9 extending substantially radially and adapted to rock or swing about a stationary pivot on the back-plate, the two links 5 and 6, as shown diagrammatically, are inclined at an obtuse angle to one another and the connection 8 between the links and the swinging arm is spaced further from the axis of the brake than are the connections between the links and the shoe ends. Adjustment of the shoe clearance for wear may be provided for, by forming the pivot 10 as an eccentric pin on a spindle 11 that may be locked in position on the back-plate. Means for centring the pivotal connection 8 between the links 5, 6 may comprise a hairspring 20 wound two or more times around the spindle 11 and having arms 21, 22 extending on each side of the pivotal connection 8.
