Abstract
669,960. Foundations for tanks. DURLEY, T. C. Nov. 14, 1950 [Nov. 15, 1949], No. 29219/49. Class 69 (i) [Also in Group X] A foundation for an oil storage tank 10 circular in plan, comprises a rigid circular member 12 concentric with the structure but of considerably greater diameter, curved in cross-section and having reinforcement 14 to withstand a hoop compression or tension at its circumference. In Fig. 1 the foundation also comprises a central part 11 of opposite curvature to the outer part 12, rising above normal ground level and supported on a bed of sand 17. In a modification, Fig. 4, the curves of the inner and outer foundation parts 41, 42 are renewed and may be made of sheet steel. When a load is largely concentrated at the periphery such as an oil tank surrounded by a blast wall, the part 12, Fig. 1, may curve up more sharply to form a cusp junction with the central part 11, and the resultant resistance force acts substantially vertically. According to the Provisional Specification the foundation may be stiffened by radial ribs spanned by slabs.
