Abstract

554,684. Tanks. WHESSOE FOUNDRY & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., BONDY, O., and GRANT, A. G. Oct. 13, 1941, No. 13154. [Class 69 (i)] Underground and other tanks for storing motor spirit, lubicating oil &c. comprise a thin shell of steel or other sheet metal rigidly attached to the tank bottom and supported externally by spaced perimetral stiffening members, and by axial stiffening members arranged at intervals around the shell and spaced therefrom and from the perimetral stiffening members, the axial stiffening members being rigidly connected to the shell and to the perimetral stiffening members by means of radial bracing brackets. As shown, the shell 1 is formed of thin steel or other metal panels and is strengthened externally by circumferentially plain or serrated angle iron &c. bands 2 welded thereto, and vertical angle &c. members 3 spaced from the shell 1 and bands 2 and welded to radial brackets 4 which are also welded to the shell and the bands 2 ; members 3 may have their outer flanges overlapping the ends of the brackets 4, or turned away therefrom. The lower ends of the members 3 are embedded in concrete and are welded to T-members 6, the inner ends of the legs of the T-members being welded to the base of the shell. The tank roof may be selfsupporting or supported by columns 8, and the upper ends of the members 3 may be embedded in the concrete of the roof. Concrete may surround the shell, and the tank &c. may be other than circular and have its axis horizontal or otherwise. The circumferential bands 2 may be formed by dividing the webs of channel section members in straight or serrated lines.
