[Also in Group XXIX] A fluid-operated speed governor comprises a a rotary impeller, the output from which acts on a rotatable body, and the latter actuates means controlling the speed of the device driving the impeller. As shown, a shaft 10 driven by the device of which the speed is to be controlled has secured thereto a disc 18 carrying radial vanes 17. Fluid entering at 39 is forced outwardly by these vanes to impinge on vanes 24 extending from a disc 23 carried by a sleeve 21 freely rotatable on shaft 10. Sleeve 21 is formed with an arm 33 which abuts against a spring 36 so that as the speed of shaft 10 increases. disc 23 will move against the resilient loading provided by the spring. Disc 23 carries a crown gear 26 which meshes with a bevel gearwheel 27 on a shaft connected through a lever 30 to means to control the speed of the device coupled to shaft 10. After passing the second rotary vane wheel, the fluid returns to the inlet 39, past a valve 42 by which the datum of the governor can be set. In a modification, the outlet from the vane 24 is situated adjacent to outer edges of the vanes.
