557,906. Variable-speed propellers. HOOVER, W. S. Dec. 12, 1941, No. 16071. [Class 114] The operation of the pitch changing mechanism is controlled by an engine driven governor and also by the speed of the aircraft. Gears 26 on the blade roots mesh with a master gear 25 fixed to the rotary element 21 of a hydraulic vane motor the flow of pressure fluid e.g. from the engine lubricating system, to which is controlled by a valve 10. The valve is actuated above a certain speed, as determined by a spring 16, by centrifugal governor weights 11 so as to keep the engine speed constant. The valve 10 is also under the control of a wind pressure plate 42 acting upon the spindle 44 of the spring 16 through a plate spring 43. The oil supply may be wholly in the hub, plunger booster pumps being carried by the hub and actuated by engagement with a fixed cam on the engine housing.
