Abstract
560,107. Screw propellers. HOOVER, W. S. Dec. 12, 1941, No. 16074. [Class 114] A two-pitch air screw is provided with means for finely adjusting the initial low pitch position of the blades. Bevel gears 3 on the blade roots mesh with a common bevel gear 23 having internal splines 83 engaging corresponding splines on a ring 18 internally splined at 84 to engage corresponding splines on the rotor 19 of a hydraulic vane motor, the stator member 24 of which has peripheral splines 81 engaging internal splines in the hub. One side of the vanes on the rotor 19 is under constant engine oil pressure through passages b, b<1> tending to move the blades to low pitch position, and the other side may be provided with high pressure oil through passages a, a<1> from a booster pump and a valve controlled by the pilot. Stops 32 on the rotor 19 co-operate with stops on the stator to limit the movements of the rotor in both directions. The splines 81, 83, 84 permit angular adjustment of the stator and rotor relatively to the hub and to each other and by suitably selecting the pitch of the splines, the initial adjustments between rotor 19 and the blades may be made in increments of a degree.
