Abstract
816,870. Variable-pitch screw-propellers. DE HAVILLAND PROPELLERS Ltd. July 4, 1957 [July 6, 1956], No. 21062/56. Class 114. In a control system for variable pitch propellers having a constant speed unit, an overspeed pitch lock governor operates at a predetermined propeller speed and pilot-controlled means are provided for setting the governor to operate at a higher speed e.g. at the maximum takeoff speed. The fine pitch oil line 4 leading to the back of the pitch change piston 2 communicates through lines 11, 10 and a valve 15 with a cylinder 8 containing a spring urged piston 7 carrying a locking tooth 6 adapted to engage locking teeth 5 associated with the piston 2 when the hydraulic pressure above the piston 7 is released. The valve 15 controls this pressure, being moved by centrifugal weights 14 when the speed is excessive to open the oil line 10 to drain 16 and to close the line 11. The valve and weights form part of a control unit 13 having beside a governor spring 19 for the weights 14 a second spring 22 engaged by a plunger 21 open to the third oil line 20 so that during takeoff the pilot may actuate the plunger to compress the second spring 22 and add its resistance to that of the spring 19. The spring 19 is set by rotating a nut 24, Fig. 3, engaging a locking piece 27, against which the spring 19 abuts, keyed to the unit 13 and locked by radial splines 25, 26 on the nut and locking piece respectively. The second spring 22 is similarly adjustable by rotating the housing 28 of the plunger 21.
