Abstract

669,834. Automatic volume control. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, D. C. Dec. 9, 1949 [Dec. 31, 1948], No. 33647/48. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Group XL (c)] The gain of an amplifier is controlled according to a given function by applying to the input of the amplifier a control frequency which is amplitude modulated according to a function which at any instant is the reciprocal of the given function, the output of the amplifier being maintained constant at the control frequency and the band-width of the amplifier being such that it passes both the control frequency and the carrier frequency it is required to amplify. The control frequency output voltage is maintained constant by means of an automatic gain control system the control voltage of which may be applied to the auxiliary grids of the amplifying valves. The system may be used for simultaneously controlling in accordance with a desired function the gain of a number of amplifiers, the modulated control frequency being applied to each amplifier and a separate A.G.C. system being provided for each. The gain of the series of amplifiers may be kept constant at the carrier frequency to be amplified if the desired function is a constant. The control frequency may be amplitude modulated by means of a cathode-ray tube in which the ray is constrained to trace the contours of a template by means of an electronic servo system as described in Specification 607,397, [Group XL (b)].
