Abstract

669,785. Superfinishingmachined surfaces. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. Dec 2, 1949 [Dec. 14,1948], No.31053/49. Class 60. A- device for superfinishing machined surfaces comprises an abrasive member or lap carried on a resilient; arm secured to a reciprocating. driven slide, means being provided for adjusting the angular setting of the arm relatively to, the slide. The device comprises a generally vertical bed 1 made-of thick sheet which may have strengthening ribs ; the sheet 1 is secured to one .flange 8 of an angleiron by bolts 9 and elongated holes 10 permitting height adjustment of the sheet; the other flange 7 of the angle iron is secured, to a thick iron extension 2 by a bolt 4 having a head 4a received in a T-groove 5 in the. extension 2. The latter is held between the jaws 3, 3 of the carriage of a lathe. To the central part of member 1 is secured a U- shaped grooved; bar 11 with horizontal flanges; one end of a leaf spring 12 is secured to a slide moving inside the bar, and the free end of the spring, carries a superfinishing abrasive stone 13. The slide is in two parts ; one part 14 is guided inside grooved-bar 11 and held therein by fomr.sets of balls 15, and the other part 17 is secured to-part-14 by dowels 18 and nuts 19. The part 14 is secured, by screws 20, to a rod 21 having a transverse slot or groove 25 engaged by a finger 26 on a slide 27 adjustably secured in a diametral slot 28 of a plate 29 the shaft of which is secured to the shaft 31 of an air turbine 32 mounted .by collars 33 in the bed 1. The position of the slide 27 in the<SP> </SP>slot 28 is indicated by a. scale. The part 17 has T grooves 40.receiving the head of a bolt 41 by which the leaf spring 12 is secured; the apparatus can thus be set up to finish an external cylindrical surface 43, Fig. 1, of a work piece 44 mounted in the headstock of the lathe, or the internal surface, of the work or the annular end surface. For lapping.the teeth of a gear 47, Fig. 8, the stone is replaced by a gear-shaped, lap. 13a. For superfinishing small members such as rollers, the roller 48, Fig. 9, is pressed by its own weight and by the pressure of the stone 13 against two rollers 49, 50 at least one of which rotates the work. The shaft of roller 50 rotates in a bed 51 hinged about the shaft of roller 49; the bed 51 is held in position during the superfinishing operation by a crutch 52 hinged to the bed at 53 and resting at 54 on the bed 55 of the lathe. When the operation is completed, crutch 52 is pivoted about hinge 53 and bed 51 is lowered; a finger 56 pivotally mounted at 57 in bed 51 and loaded by a counterweight 58 ejects the work piece 48 which rolls down incline 59.
