Abstract

Ethylene and a minor proportion of allyl or methallyl alcohol are interpolymerized at temperatures between 60 DEG and 200 DEG C. and under superatmospheric pressure, e.g. 100 to 2000 atmospheres, in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl or ditertiary butyl peroxide, oxygen, azobisisobutyronitrile and azodicyclohexanecarbonitrile, to yield a waxy product. Up to 10 per cent of an interpolymerizing substance, e.g. carbon monoxide, may be introduced to increase the rate of interpolymerization. The process may be continuous. Compositions of the interpolymers containing paraffin wax, stearic acid, dyes, e.g. Nigrosine and Victoria Blue B. Base, white spirit and turpentine may be used as shoe polishes, carbon paper waxes, pencils, lipsticks and cosmetics.
