Abstract

1,272,614. Olefin/carbon monoxide copolymers. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 April, 1969 [28 May, 1968], No. 21467/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C5] Copolymers of MW 500-50,000 comprising a major weight proportion of C 2 -C 30 α-olefin and CO in a relative molar proportion of olefin : CO of 0À5 to 40 :1, are prepared by free-radical catalysis in solution. The copolymers may comprise up to 30 wt. per cent of a third comonomer which is an unsaturated ester of the formula R 1 R 2 C=CHR 3 where R 1 is H or Me, R 2 is -OOCR 4 or -COOR 4 where R 4 is H or C 1 -C 16 alkyl; and R 3 is H or -COOR 4 . Preferred ester comonomers are vinyl acetate and isobutyl acrylate or methacrylate. Examples describe the co-polymerization of CO with ethylene and/or n-tetradecene using dilauryl peroxide or di-t-butyl peroxide as free radical initiators. The copolymers are added in minor amounts to hydrocarbon oils.
