Abstract

669,173. Axial-flow compressors. ESCHER WYSS AKT.-GES. Jan. 11, 1950. [Jan. 14, 1949] No. 750/50. Class 110(i). Two rotors 1 and 2 are arranged one behind the other and driven by a single engine 4, and adjustable valves, such as flap valves 10, are provided between the rotors whereby the compressed medium can be made to byepass the rotor 2 when a low outlet pressure is required, the coupling 2 then being disengaged. The byepassed medium flows through. two lateral passages 8 to the discharge diffuser 9. Preferably, flap or slide valves 10<SP>1</SP> are provided, as shown, at the diffuser 9. At least one of the rotors may have adjustable blades and there may be step-up gearing between the two rotors. The compressor may be used in a wind tunnel operating at both subsonic and supersonic velocities.
