Abstract

668,977. Mixing charge; pumps; valves and valve gear. COOPER-BESSEMER CORPORATION. March 24, 1950 [April 8, 1949], No. 7419/50. Classes 7(ii) and 7(vi) In a four-stroke gas engine having a compression pressure of about 600 lb. per square inch at full load, the temperature of the exhaust gases is kept down to about 1000‹F., to allow the utilization of an exhaust-driven supercharger 23 supplying air as to a conduit 10, by valve mechanism 5, 13 operating to produce in the cylinder a gas-air mixture too weak to ignite spontaneously but which is fired by a spark igniter 21 preferably using an E.M.F. of the order of 30,000 to 50,000 volts. A main admission valve 5 opens towards the end of the exhaust stroke, before closure of the exhaust valve 20, to admit scavenging air from the conduit 10. Following exhaust valve closure and during the early part of the admission stroke, an auxiliary admission valve 13 is also opened to mix permanent gas under pressure from a conduit 11 with charging air from the conduit 10 in a chamber 9. The valve 13 is operated by a collar 16 on the stem of the valve 5 and has a sealing head 14, but does not operatively admit gas to the chamber 9 until passages 17 in the valve communicate therewith. The valve 13 closes before the valve 5. The permanent gas used may be a natural gas or a primary product or byproduct manufactured gas. Sewer or refinery gases may be employed. Butane or propane. which may be stored in the liquid state but are supplied in the gaseous form, may be used. The proportion of gas to air in the mixture employed is preferably one to twenty, but may be as high as one to fourteen. The engine may be regulated by a governor-controlled valve in the conduit 11.
