Abstract
668,553. Tool-holders. ZIEGLER, K. March 9, 1949, No. 6471/49. Class 83 (iii). A tool-holder for use with boring and forming tools, drills, taps, and reamers in lathes and the like comprises a body member 2, Fig. 1, having a longitudinal bore 4 to accommodate adjustably a seating element 8 of part-cylindrical form on which the tool 14 is clamped in position to extend lengthwise of both the seating element and body member, screw means for partially rotating the element 8 in the bore 4, and means for anchoring it after adjustment. Two sets of seating elements 8, Fig. 4, of opposite hand may be provided for each symmetrical body member 2, each element differing from the others of a set in the angle of inclination of its tool-seating surface 13 which may range up to 8 degrees from the horizontal. The bore 4, Fig. 1, is preferably parallel-sided and one wall may be cut away to reduce the clearance necessary for the body which has a bar 3 projecting longitudinally therefrom to be held in a tool-post. Following angular adjustment of the seating element 8 by a screw 19 which engages a recess 22 therein, it is anchored by at least one bolt 16 passing through a slot 17 in the body member 2 and engaging a threaded hole in the seating element, the tool 14 being held on the seating by at least one bolt 23 engaging the top of the tool and passing through a threaded opening in the body member. A two-part scale 11, to indicate the angular adjustment of the seating element 8, may be provided on the flanged end 9 thereof or on the end of the body member 2. which may also support a chip breaker. In the embodiments illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the seating elements have been modified to facilitate a lateral disposition of the tool in relation to the body member.
