Abstract

668,328. Compound fabrics; finishing edges of sheet material. AMERICAN REENFORCED PAPER CO. July 18, 1949 [July 26, 1948], No. 18880/49. Classes 42 (i) and 140. A multi-ply sheet is composed of at least two superposed layers 2, 4, of paper-like material united by an interposed layer of adhesive 6 which is substantially thinner at and adjacent the lateral edges than in the remainder. The adhesive may be asphalt or an asphalt-like material; it may be applied to both layers before these are united, and reinforcing fibres 8, 10 may be embedded in it. The portion of the sheet which is to become the edge may be compressed by passing between a roller 12a having adjustable spring-pressed bearings, and a supporting roller 16a. This causes the adhesive to be extruded from the compressed zone, which is then slit by a cutter such as the wheel 18a. In the case of box stay tapes longitudinal fibre reinforcement only may be provided, and one of the layers may be of creped paper.
